The Titty Library is a set of artist books I researched, wrote, designed, illustrated, RISO printed, and hand-bound to share my experience with my medically necessary breast reduction surgery I received when I was 18. While preparing for the surgery, I realized the materials explaining the surgery were unempathetic and poorly designed. These books were my way of creating the supportive resources I wish I’d had.

RISO printing allowed me to achieve the vibrant color I envisioned. I used shifting type weights to reflect the fluctuation of my body throughout the procedure, making the type part of the narrative.

pre and post

Pre and Post is a gatefold book that covers preparing for surgery and recovery. Its four-page spreads gave me space to play with layout in new and exciting ways. RISO printing the complex structure was technically challenging but ultimately rewarding.

A Tale of Two Titties is a 24-page accordion book illustrating my personal journey. This was the book where I created something my younger self would have cherished.

The project culminated in an exhibition, The Titty Library, featuring both books and a sculptural installation made from old bras. I learned how to embroider scenes from the books onto the bras, bringing the narrative into a physical space. The show resonated deeply with many visitors who had undergone the surgery or were considering the procedure themselves.
